# hreflang and Multilingual Search: Language Relationships Matter More Than Translation

## Definition in one sentence

**hreflang** is a link signal that tells search engines about the relationships between corresponding URLs in different languages and regions.

> Key answer: If you merely duplicate language paths without adding content, or publish machine translations without review, both users and search engines may land on the wrong page.

## Why is this technology needed?

If you merely duplicate language paths without adding content, or publish machine translations without review, both users and search engines may land on the wrong page.

## How it works

Each language page should reference itself and its actual corresponding translations. The canonical should point to the page in that language, and language codes should use the standard format.

When designing a system, accuracy is not the only consideration. Latency, cost, data boundaries, update frequency, and behavior in the event of failure must also be defined to produce reproducible results in production. For values that automation cannot determine confidently, it is safer to leave them as unmeasured or requiring review rather than converting them to zero or marking them as successful.

## How it connects to SAG technology

SAG CMS separates review and publication status by language. It includes only translations that have actually been published in hreflang and the sitemap, avoiding references to alternate pages that do not exist.

## Practical checklist

- Use a unique URL and self-canonical for each language
- Verify reciprocal hreflang links
- Do not publish pages before their translations have been reviewed
- Distinguish the status of failures, empty results, and permission errors from success
- Revalidate before and after changes under the same conditions

## Research and official documentation

Reference documents support the underlying principles and recommendations. They do not guarantee search visibility, AI mentions, rankings, or revenue. The actual impact of implementation should be verified using service data and observations made under the same conditions.
