# Publication Month and Analysis Month: Why an October Report Should Explain September

## What Is a Month-End Briefing?

**It is an operational structure that defines the report’s publication date separately from the period being evaluated.** This note considers the month-end briefing in terms of the responsibilities for inputs, transformations, and outputs, rather than as a feature name. To trust an analysis result, it must be clear what data came in, what was checked, and how far the conclusions can go.

## Why Is This Technology Needed?

Mixing this month’s in-progress data with last month’s finalized data makes it difficult to interpret month-over-month changes and the effects of assigned work. Describing an unfinished period as finalized results can cause even greater misunderstanding.

## Design Principles and Data Flow

Separate publicationMonth and analysisMonth, and group monthly reports around the entire preceding month. Specify different periods in the current-month card and the report title.

> **Select publication month** → **Previous month’s finalized data** → **Briefing with the period specified**

Each stage must not relabel the success of the preceding stage as the outcome of the next. Recording data identifiers, periods, and validation status throughout makes it possible to locate where omissions and errors occurred and determine what needs to be checked again.

## Connection to the SAG Architecture

SAG monthly briefings use all data from the month preceding the publication month. They explain that the periods covered by the selected month’s status graph and the monthly closing report may differ.

SAG’s operational value lies in connecting this relationship to pages and questions, comparison results, and improvement work. Instead of reading only the numbers, customers can review both what needs to be strengthened and the grounds for the assessment. Patterns that require further application should be interpreted within the scope of the relevant paragraph.

## Illustrative Example and Criteria for Assessment

For illustration, an October publication uses data from September 1 through 30. October’s in-progress status is shown on a separate card, so the difference between the two values is not mistaken for a data error.

The example above is intended to explain the structure and calculations; it does not represent measured performance at any particular customer company. Actual reports must link the selected period, subject, and observation conditions to the source records so that the same assessment can be checked again.

## Practical Verification Checklist

| Flow stage | Item to check |
| --- | --- |
| Select publication month | Separate publication and analysis periods |
| Previous month’s finalized data | Check month-end and year-end calculations |
| Briefing with the period specified | Define criteria for correcting delayed data |

Check that the meaning remains consistent not only with normal inputs, but also with missing data, duplicate data, and data collected under different conditions. Connecting verification items to completion criteria for the work can reduce the gap between the feature description and actual operations.

## Limitations and Points to Note When Applying

If observations arrive late, a republication or correction policy is needed. Closing a period is a boundary for reporting, not a guarantee that the data is complete.

External materials provide background on the design topic above; they do not certify every SAG implementation or customer outcome. Interpretations of applicability and illustrative examples in this note are organized according to the SAG operational structure. Source checked: 2026-10-06.
