Idempotency in Cron Jobs: How to Preserve Results When a Job Runs Twice
A design for identifying scheduled runs as the same business task and controlling duplicates and conflicts. Schedules can be duplicated, delayed, or fail. Treating the number of runs as equal to the number of successful saves can cause duplicate records and cost errors.
What Is Idempotency for Scheduled Jobs?
It is a design for identifying scheduled runs as the same business task and controlling duplicates and conflicts. This note treats idempotency for scheduled jobs as a matter of responsibilities across inputs, transformations, and outputs, rather than as a feature name. To trust an analysis result, it must be possible to trace what data was received, what was checked, and what conclusions can be drawn from it.
Why Is This Technology Needed?
Schedules can be duplicated, delayed, or fail. Treating the number of runs as equal to the number of successful saves can cause duplicate records and cost errors.
Design Principles and Data Flow
Include the tenant, target, period, and ruleset version in the key, and manage the state. A new page version is different from preventing duplicate processing of the same task.
Scheduled run → Task identification and execution → Storage and error history
Each stage must not describe the success of the previous stage as an outcome of the next one. Keeping records of data identifiers, periods, and validation status lets you locate where omissions and errors occurred and determine what needs to be checked again.
Connection to SAG Architecture
SAG connects scheduled agent workflows with task and usage records. The retry policy must be checked against the meaning of the data being stored.
SAG's operational value lies in connecting this relationship to pages and questions, comparison results, and improvement work. Instead of reading only numbers, customers can review both what needs improvement and the basis for the judgment. Patterns that require additional application should be interpreted according to the scope of the relevant paragraph.
Illustrative Example and Criteria for Evaluation
If an illustrative scheduled job starts twice, use the key to determine whether it is a duplicate or a collection at a new point in time. Counting every run as a new analysis or deleting runs unconditionally distorts the history.
The example above is for explaining the structure and calculation; it is not a measured result from a specific customer. An actual report should link the selected period, target, observation conditions, and source records so that the same judgment can be checked again.
Practical Verification Checklist
| Workflow stage | What to check |
|---|---|
| Scheduled run | Validate period and target keys |
| Task identification and execution | Test duplicate execution |
| Storage and error history | Record failures and retries |
Check that the meaning remains consistent not only for valid inputs, but also for empty data, duplicate data, and data with different conditions. Connecting verification items to the task completion criteria can reduce the gap between the feature description and actual operations.
Limitations and Considerations for Use
Execution time alone does not guarantee that data is complete. Failure records, retry limits, and a path for manual reruns are also needed.
